The Senior Underwriter will analyze Financial Protection Products- Group Life, Group Short Term Disability (STD), Group Long Term Disability (LTD) and Supplemental Health- plan characteristics and assess risk. The Senior Underwriter will be responsible for protecting profit while balancing sales growth pressure.

If you are located within commutable distance from Portland, ME and Hartford, CT you will have the flexibility to telecommute* as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Analyze Group Life, Disability plan characteristics and assess risks as to frequency and potential severity of loss of clients
  • Utilize established underwriting criteria and policies to provide proper rating methodologies
  • Represent and negotiate rates and plan options with insurers to optimize cost-competitive Group Life, Disability and Supplemental Health benefit plans
  • Build and maintain models to assist in the economic analysis of market alternative

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Math, Finance, Business or related degree
  • 5+ years of experience underwriting Group Life, Disability and/or Supplemental Health products on both a manual and experience rated basis
  • Proficient Product Knowledge, including product and contract provisions, plan designs, pricing and various funding arrangements
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office suite (including Word and Excel)
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. When in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are required to wear a mask in common areas. In addition, employees must comply with any state and local masking orders

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with groups of 1,000 lives or more
  • Experience with Training and Development of others
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to effectively work in teams or individually
  • Demonstrated Success collaborating with internal and external partners to develop appropriate case strategies
