Laurel Heights Hospital, a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility for children and adolescents, is seeking a FT, exempt, Therapist to work with pre-adolescent and adolescent males and/or females, ages, 5-17, who are intellectually delayed, ranging from mild to profound, in addition to experiencing varied diagnoses and psychological or emotional problems, such as: trauma, abandonment, PTSD, substance abuse. This person will also be working with challenging family situations and develops and implements therapeutic treatment plan in residential setting in compliance with state, federal, agency and all other applicable rules and regulations. This position will be responsible for individual, group and family therapy weekly along with completion of all documentation within a 24 hour time period. In addition, to providing therapy services, case management and discharge planning experience are critical to providing comprehensive care. This individual needs to have prior experience working with different populations as well as patients who have developmental disabilities and have experienced significant trauma. This person will be able to work and provide supervision to direct care staff regarding, behavior plans, interventions, how to provide group therapy, and how to provide a therapeutic milieu for this challenging population.

Job Requirements

Full-time exempt Unit Therapist position (minimum 40 hours per wk.); fully licensed masters level degree in mental health/social services/counseling field to work with males and females, age range from 5-17who are developmentally delayed and experiencing significant psychiatric and behavioral symptoms. This is a challenging population, therefore; this individual must have the following requirements and/or experience:

  • Plans and administers therapeutic treatment, behavior modification, and stress management therapy to assist residents in developing/displaying appropriate behaviors
  • Changes method and degree of therapy when indicated by resident reactions/needs
  • Discusses progress toward goals with residents such as medication regiment, family relationships, educational programs, social development, discharge plans or other behavioral problems

Consults with psychologist/psychiatrist or other specialists concerning treatment plans and amends plans as required.

Maintains regular contacts with other agencies/professionals regarding client progress in the therapeutic treatment program through phone calls, letters, and/or monthly reporting.

Develops and implements appropriate discharge planning with resident, family, and placing agency.

Develops and maintains positive relationship with external customers, families and residents and employees.

  • Ability to assess treatment goals and write goal-directed, individualized treatment plans, as well as the ability to monitor and document individual behavior patterns and modify treatment plans to meet changing treatment goals.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the therapeutic process and commitment to help the youth achieve their treatment goals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage difficult client discussions.
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors and outside agencies.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
  • Proven track record of reliability and consistency of high performance. Strong desire to learn and grow professionally.
  • Exhibits an exemplary work ethic by being highly organized, detailed and thorough.
  • Must have a valid Drivers License in state of residency.
