Newport News Behavioral Health Center offers hope and healing, providing intensive residential and acute treatment, for males and females ages 8-21. Newport News Behavioral Health Center uses a cognitive behavioral treatment model that encourages youth to safely explore thoughts and feelings related to the development of positive and desirable behavior within their homes and communities. Our programs have been designed to provide each individual resident quality mental health treatment in a safe therapeutic environment. It is the mission of Newport News Behavioral Health Center to promote recovery from the effects of abuse, addiction and other behavioral issues through specialized treatment interventions provided by a community of caring professionals.

Mental Health Technician (MHT) is a member of the program team, observes and reports physical and behavioral symptoms under the supervision of the Program Coordinator as well as receiving direction from Teachers in the school setting. MHT is an active participant in the implementation of physical care, therapeutic activities, and the academic program. Assist in planning and implementing treatment programs for residents, implements functional behavioral assessment/behavior intervention plans as well as individualized academic or behavioral goals, accommodations, and services as defined by Individualized Instructional Plans (IIPs), Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and 504 Plans.   • Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Good verbal and written skills, ability to rotate shifts and units as necessary, and ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of principles of psychology and child growth and development are useful.
  • Limit-setting, responding to children and adolescents in a caring, mature manner, while maintaining professional boundaries necessary.
  • Must consistently exhibit mental and emotional ability to understand and perform the essential functions of the job.


  • Must possess either a Bachelors degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field in Human Services from an accredited University or College
  • Associate Degree in Psychology, Social Work or a related field in Human Services from an accredited University or College with a minimum of six (6) months of experience working with adolescents and children or providing direct care to residents
  • High School diploma or a General Education Development Certificate (G.E.D.) with a minimum of one (1) year of experience working with adolescents and children or providing direct care to residents.
  • Previous experience working with adolescents in a residential, acute or inpatient psychiatric setting is a plus.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • 80-90% of the time, the incumbent is standing, walking, kneeling, or reaching while working with patient.
  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and physical restraint of patients.
