Our Behavioral Health Technicians serve as a role model to our patients through the provision of therapeutic interactions, using appropriate counseling skills by de-escalating aggression, using active listening skills, using appropriate tone and volume of voice, providing a high frequency and variety of positive reinforcements, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and promoting a positive peer culture.

Our BHTs provide consistent professional direct care, supervision, and mentoring to our youth and adolescent patients during group sessions and education, recreational activities, hygiene, meals and sleep. In the BHT role, you will participate in the implementation of patients treatment plan by providing care and close supervision of facility patients and documenting behavior; developing positive relationships with patients and co-workers; following policies and procedures as to ensure our focus is and priority is always on our patients and their safety; facilitating group sessions and providing crisis intervention as necessary.

Job Requirements

The Lead BHS is a member of the interdisciplinary team who assists in total client care through implementation of appropriate therapeutic approaches and related nursing functions within the therapeutic environment. The Lead BHS provides direct patient care, facilitating a therapeutic and safe milieu by appropriate interaction with clients and ensuring the proper level of resident supervision is maintained. Primary responsibilities include maintaining proper clinical documentation, running therapeutic group sessions, responsible for supervising BHT/S who work in the PHP department, scheduling PHP BHT/S for call ins and requested time off, and maintaining a safe and therapeutic milieu including crisis intervention. Additional tasks include intervening therapeutically to suicidal gesture, assault behavior, elopement attempts or inappropriate behavior , communicating intervention to their supervisor, assisting the proper handling of emergencies of the unit and hospital, and participating in planning, assisting in getting patients to designated transportation at the end of the programming day, organizing the daily activities of the unit program, and preparing weekly programming materials for the entire PHP program. The Lead BHS also assists with orienting new personnel, as assigned and accepts reassignments to other units, when necessary.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Education: BA or BS Degree in a related mental health field required.

Experience: One (1) year in a mental health setting preferred.

Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing processes, therapeutic relationships and processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting, crisis and behavior management, restraint and seclusion procedures and criteria and CPR training. Ability to work with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from substance abuse and a variety of mental illnesses. Knowledge of DCFS mandated reporting requirements. Demonstrated flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to varied populations including children, adolescents, and adults. Effective oral and written communication skills. Skill in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines. Must be a self-starter and goal/results-oriented. Ability to use good judgment and to maintain confidentiality of information. Strong customer service skills to external and internal customers. Ability to adhere to safety policies and code procedures react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to accept direction and adhere to policies and procedures. Ability to work in a fast paced environment. Ability to recommend/take corrective courses of action that would improve the functioning of the departments systems.
