Position Description:

POSITION PURPOSE
The Senior Manager, Tax Planning & Audits is an exciting and challenging role in a fast-paced Tax Department reporting directly to the Senior Director, Tax. The Senior Manager will have responsibilities for the strategic aspects of The Home Depot’s Federal and International tax planning and audit function. The scope of responsibility to include all domestic and international research and planning, tax audit defense, M&A, and tax advocacy. The position is responsible for managing a team of tax consultants and staff to maintain effective controls, while initiating, directing, and implementing tax-saving strategies, researching complex tax issues, analyzing tax legislation, interfacing with corporate and business leadership as well as with external tax consultants, professional organizations and government representatives. 

Identify, oversee and proactively initiate and execute viable alternatives that enable the successful execution of tax planning and other business related projects/initiatives. Manage all aspects of various worldwide tax projects, including analyzing relevant tax law for tax planning transactions, working with foreign and US tax advisors to understand relevant tax rules. Develop and drive tax controversy strategy, while coordinating with outside advisors as needed. Act as main interface with IRS to drive the successful defense of the Company’s tax positions.  Foster engagement and transformation through strong partnerships across organizations by providing tax advice, identify tax planning opportunities and collaborating with business partner on business processes or operational changes. Partner with Tax Accounting team to ensure all aspects of tax planning are accurately reflected in the financial statements and reserve analysis is in accordance with FIN 48 and properly documented. Partner with Tax Compliance team to ensure all aspects of tax planning are accurately reflected in the Company’s tax filings and/or disclosures, while ensuring proper consideration and documentation exists to support any further examination. Proactively lead US and international tax advocacy while keeping abreast of tax legislation and developments, developing strategy and advising senior management on the business impact of new tax laws, regulations, court decisions and proposed legislations.

 

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • 60% Tax Planning, Accounting, Research, Compliance, and Audit Defense as needed to meet the goals of the Department. May serve as principal contact on one or more projects with governmental officials, outside counsel, and business partners. Lead special studies to determine tax implications of company operations. Responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely filing of tax returns, and for the accurate statement of accounting reserves, including ASC 740 and FIN 48 where applicable. May serve as liaison between SSC and subsidiary businesses in the US and internationally.

  • 30% Participation on cross-functional teams as a subject-matter expert

  • 10% Coaching and mentoring of associates in the department

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be eighteen years of age or older.
Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Additional Minimum Qualifications:

Education Required:
The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.

Years of Relevant Work Experience: 8 years

Physical Requirements:
Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.
Additional Qualifications:
Demonstrate technical tax skills appropriate for the years of experience in the one or more tax disciplines. Demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage and implement multiple complex projects, people management, and communications to both technical and non-technical audiences. Proven analytical and problem resolution skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA, CMI, or JD strongly preferred
    MACc, MBA or MTAX preferred
    8-10 years’ experience preferred
    A leader with a flexible growth mindset and willingness to embrace change

  • Thinks outside of the box and is excited about creating and implementing planning strategies to optimize the Company’s tax positions

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills that can convey complex ideas and concepts in a clear manner at all levels of the organization

  • Proven track record of developing talent, project management and building effective teams

  • Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining reasonable solutions to drive results

  • Strong organizational and multitasking capabilities

  • Eager to continue learning and staying abreast of US and international tax developments

  • Organized and who can manage and support US and international tax audits

  • Excellent written and communication skills

  • Proven track record in leading tax planning and structuring projects including corporate acquisitions, divestitures and reorganizations, operational initiatives and other corporate led projects

  • Team player that  collaborates and aligns with  all stakeholders on complex tax planning and business initiatives
