The external research specialist will provide scientific and operational support for chemistry teams and workflows that are jointly managed by External Research Solutions Asia and US-based project teams across Pfizer's research units. He or she will be responsible for managing numerous chemistry workflows, tools, operations and relationships with partners & CROs in Asia (primarily based in Shanghai). He or she will also participate in and lead continuous improvement initiatives, develop and implement new workflows, and manage metrics (data analytics) to maximize efficiency and enable research project delivery. This position will have a solid line report to the ERS Asia Operation Lead (Shanghai). This position will work in a matrix with other members of ERS Chemistry in the US.

+ Provide local chemistry support to ensure smooth operation of day-to-day activities at our chemistry CROs

+ Engage with our chemistry CROs through routine daily or weekly visits and meetings to support day-to-day operations

+ Manage and support chemistry- and biology-based logistics and workflows to meet the sourcing needs of Pfizer clients (research project teams) at our partners/vendors in Asia

+ Work with Pfizer scientists and ERS team members to understand project and portfolio needs as it relates to enabling local (Asia) chemistry teams, logistics and operations

+ Contribute to and participate in problem solving and continuous improvement (CI) efforts on logistics/IT/operations enablement for optimal collaborations between ERS, Pfizer project teams and our vendors

+ Coordinate with Asia and US research colleagues in ERS to ensure efficient business continuity of data and sample logistics

+ Participate in and lead continuous improvement (CI) initiatives to help in understanding the logistics and workflows of sourcing activities on chemistry teams at our vendors (e.g. end-to-end chemistry workflow, synthesis, purification, QC, compound valuation, tariff (HTS) coding, compound registration, shipping, electronic notebook, etc.), support implementation & roll-out, and ensure adoption at our vendors

+ Manage data analytics -data capture & analysis, interpretation and presentation of metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) of sourcing-related activities to partners and clients

Provide regular feedback on the efficiency and effectiveness of current procedures to manager and other colleagues is expected



+ MS or PhD in Chemistry or related fields, preferably in Synthetic/Organic Chemistry

+ PhD, 1+ year working experience in pharmaceutical industry or CRO

+ MS, 5+ year working experiences in pharmaceutical industry or CRO

+ At least 2 years bench work experiences in a scientific lab, ideally in the fields chemistry and preferably organic chemistry

+ Work experience in a pharmaceutical/biotech/life sciences area of research required

+ Must have a basic understanding of the drug discovery process and the end-to-end chemistry workflows used in drug discovery

+ Familiarity with chemistry tools and evaluation for data analysis and analytics

+ Excellent computer skills including Excel, Word, Power Points

+ Advanced skills and proficiency in software packages for data management and analysis on large amount of scientific data and chemistry tools

+ Comfortable in communicating and working via Teleconference, emails as needed and working remotely

+ Strong verbal and written communication skills for interaction with stakeholders, manager and colleagues; excellent oral and written English language skills

+ Exhibited sound judgment on sensitive issues and work with confidential documents and information. Ability to act with professionalism


+ Flexibility and ability to work in a highly organized manner in an environment with frequent tight deadlines

+ Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization and multi-cultural context

+ This role requires regular but infrequent telephone conferences with colleagues in US and other time zones, which may occur in the evenings.



+ Education background and knowledge in Chemistry and strong preference in organic chemistry

+ Hands-on experiences of chemistry discipline in general and how this is applied to drug discovery

+ Working knowledge of scientific data management and integration in research environment;

+ Preferred to have at least one year CRO or pharmaceutical industry experiences
