**What You Will Achieve**



Pfizer's Oncology Research Unit (ORU) in La Jolla, California, is seeking a Senior Associate Scientist whose exciting role will be focused on translating basic discoveries in the field of cancer and immuno-oncology epigenetics into novel small molecule therapies by performing lab-based target validation and mechanism of action studies. Our ideal candidate will work within a collaborative team environment to perform laboratory-based research, employing genetic and pharmacological methods to discover and evaluate candidates for novel cancer and immuno-oncology therapeutics. The successful candidate will use a variety of tools including, molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques, as well as modern imaging, immunology assays, and bioinformatics to develop and implement assays supporting identification and development of molecules that impact tumor growth and enhance anti-tumor immunity. The candidate will interpret and present data, and function as an integral member of the team to advance new targets.



**How You Will Achieve It**



The Senior Associate Scientist will work independently and as part of project teams to design, execute, analyze/interpret, and refine experiments ranging from biochemical and molecular assays, target modulation in model systems, in vitro pharmacology, biomarker assay development, and functional cellular assays using cancer cell lines and primary immune cells.



Depending upon the maturity of project, specific duties include:



+ Application of genetic and pharmacologic approaches to modulate drug targets in vitro, and assess functional impact on cancer initiation and progression and/or effects on immune response (examples include: CRISPR technology, antibody use, small molecules and other pharmacologic approaches)

+ Cell-based assays across various technology platforms - qPCR, ChIP, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, immunofluorescence, western blotting, ELISA, cytotoxicity, high content screening, etc.

+ Preparation of samples/libraries for next-generation sequencing

+ Isolation of subsets of primary mouse and human immune cells for in vitro immune cell-based functional assays

+ Flow cytometry (immune cell profiling, cell cycle analysis, etc) and analysis using FlowJo software

+ Develop and apply complex in vitro assays for target validation and secondary pharmacology: spheroid models, colony forming assays, 3D co-culture systems.

+ Excellent organization and planning skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment independently or as part of a team, good verbal and written communication, and strong motivation with a dedicated work ethic.

+ Use electronic notebook documentation/ including analysis tools such as Excel, GraphPad, Spotfire and PowerPoint for experimental documentation and data analysis/presentations.

+ Present research results and methodologies at meetings with immediate supervisor, at Epigenetic team meetings, and with members of the oncology research unit as appropriate

+ Contribute to building a culture that embraces scientific excellence, urgency, continuous learning and improvement, increasing technical skill base and cancer biology expertise; take a proactive role in personal growth and scientific development.



**Qualifications**



**Must-Have**



+ B.S. in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology (or a comparable biological science) with minimum of 3+ years relevant post-degree experience

+ Extensive hands on experience with cell-based assays (cancer and primary immune cells) to monitor and analyze effects of target modulation (ELISA/MSD, western blotting, FACS or proliferation readouts).

+ Strong foundation in molecular biology techniques

+ Must be able to work in a team environment, have excellent communication skills and be able to present data at project team meetings.

+ Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to manage projects in parallel.

+ Ability to use appropriate software to perform analysis of data.

+ Experience with experimental design and the interpretation of results.

+ Effective verbal and written communication skills.

+ Proficiency with personal computers, including word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, GraphPad and relevant scientific software (including FlowJo).



**Nice-to-Have**



+ M.S. in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology (or a comparable biological science) with 0-3 years of relevant experience or B.S. with 5+ years post-degree experience

+ Experience in functional genomics techniques (such as CRISPR or RNAi) for target assessment and generation of cell lines

+ Experience in molecular biology techniques for analysis of chromatin structure/function and gene expression, or experience in functional immune assay design and execution



**Physical/Mental Requirements**



+ Must be able to wear standard PPE (lab coat/safety shoes/glasses/etc.) and perform lifting of items (less than 10 lbs)
