Designs, develops, implements, documents, and supports databases, ensuring acceptable database availability (including disaster recovery), capacity, and performance. Creates logical data models for new databases and reviews data access code, recommending changes to developers.
Ensures acceptable database availability and response time by leading database problem diagnosis and resolution, proactive performance monitoring, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
Provides technical leadership, advice, and mentoring to: DBAs, application developers, project leaders, and business users.
Researches and evaluates emerging database technologies and trends, which could include building relationships with vendors to understand future direction of database technology.
Designs (logically and physically) large, complex, business-critical databases based on business requirements gathered from application development teams and business users.
Ensures compliance with audit, security, and regulatory requirements.
Performs complex software installation and maintenance, including new releases, database instance creation, major upgrades and software patches.
Proficient in evaluating and recommending software and hardware solutions, gathering opinions and reaching consensus from a wide audience of stakeholders.
Understanding of and commitment to protecting the integrity, security and privacy of the firm's critical business data.
Provides considerable after-hours and weekend support and participate in on-call rotation (24X7).
*Qualifications Required in the Job:*
Bachelor's degree in Business, Mathematics, Computer Information Systems, or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
Minimum of 5 years of experience / subject matter expert on one or more of the following database management systems: IDMS, DB2, Oracle, or SQL Server.
Minimum of 5 years of experience with one or more of the following:
o Database tools, such as: CA DB2 Tools, SQL Developer, OEM / Grid, Toad
o Physical and logical replication, examples include: HUR, Quest Shareplex or Data Guard (Oracle), Trans log shipping or Data Mirroring (SQL Server)
Minimum of 5 years of experience with more than one of the following: Linux, current release of Oracle, PL/SQL, ASM, MS Windows, SQL Server (2000, 2005, or 2008), tuning, replication, data modeling, development life cycle methodologies, ASP, .NET, z/OS, DB2, IDMS, or COBOL.
*Problem Solving:*
Each database design and performance problem is unique. Specific applications require considerable thinking and planning. Sr. DBAs work on the most complex designs and problems which have their root cause in hardware, operating system software, application software, network, SQL coding, database capacity or database design. Must clearly document root cause and solution applied.
*Decision Making:*
Reviews decisions of less-experienced DBAs. Sr. DBAs frequently work independently and without supervision. Often, Sr. DBAs are consulted on problems with high visibility, and high risk to the firm. In situations where database technology is down and clients are being impacted, Sr. DBAs are sometimes called on to make decisions without assistance from their leaders. Procedures and standards are in place to guide some decisions, but most require the exercise of considerable judgment outside the guidelines.
*Span of Influence:*
Sr. DBAs are responsible for databases underlying core business processes, and they work on the most complex, business-critical applications. They interact with project/support teams, business users, and IS leadership. They may direct the activities of others in the process of resolving problems or in leading data technology strategy efforts.
Sr. DBAs have no administrative leadership responsibility, but are responsible for mentoring peers and providing performance feedback to leaders.
