The Home Depot Rental operates in over 1100 locations of The Home Depot across the US and Canada, offering large towable equipment, tools, trucks and trailer rental along with on-site equipment delivery.  The large equipment fleet includes trenchers, chippers, mini-excavators, skid steers, aerial work platform equipment, and tractor loader backhoes among others.  With a large team of highly trained technicians, shop techs, and VIP Delivery Technicians and customer care associates throughout the United States and Canada.

Equipment Mechanic/Shop Tech I

Responsible for basic repairs, preventive maintenance, pre-delivery inspections (PDI), and deployment of machines in the rental fleet, including earthmoving, aerial, landscaping, and material handling equipment. Regular preventive maintenance of equipment is required to ensure that it remains in rental-ready condition, and is less likely to experience breakdowns on the jobsite.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs preventive maintenance (PMs) on equipment according to prescribed schedule/maintenance intervals

  • Performs pre-delivery inspections (PDIs) on equipment and trailers to ensure rental readiness prior to deploying to a store

  • Performs troubleshooting and repairs on small engines, including fuel systems, oil and air filtration systems, ignition systems, etc.

  • Changes wheels, tracks, and tires on machines and trailers

  • Performs maintenance and repairs on trailers

  • Checks GPS units on equipment and ensures they are activated and properly checking in, and troubleshoots with IT team as needed.

  • Performs aerial lift inspections according to required checklist

  • Cleans equipment and trailers

  • Documents all work performed on tablet technology, including completion of work orders to capture parts usage and labor, performing parts inventory counts, etc.

  • Rescues equipment from jobsites as needed

  • Follows shop safety protocol, including proper storage of supplies and fuel, proper disposal of waste oils and fluids, and proper lifting and moving of materials and equipment.

  • Safely operates forklift to load, unload, and move equipment and materials in the shop and yard.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions may include working in the outdoors on construction equipment as well as in cold, hot and damp areas.  Lifting from the waist, lifting from the shoulder, prolonged standing and repetition of hand and arm movements, working at heights and bending is also a part of working conditions. 

 

Requirements:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude

  • Ability to follow instructions for servicing and repairing equipment

  • Ability to read technical and service manuals

  • Ability to consistently and accurately document work performed

  • Competent in the use of tablet and computer technology to document service work

  • Strong light construction equipment maintenance skills

  • Familiarity with inventory management

  • Good communication skills and organization skills

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work efficiently

  • Ability to work independently

  • Experience, ability and desire to provide superior customer service

  • Experience in equipment rental industry preferred

  • Landscape/rental/construction background preferred

  • Ability to safely lift 80 lbs minimum

  • Valid driver’s license

    Required Education

  • High School Diploma or GED, Tech School or OEM Training - or equivalent experience required

  • 1-3 years of experience with general maintenance of construction-related lines of equipment
