Job Description

To supervise the operation of the Shipping Department, providing timely and efficient service to all external and internal customers at the most economical cost and within established safety and quality standards.


  • Responsible for supervising the Shipping functions in order to provide optimum movement of raw materials, package materials, and finished product at the most efficient and economical cost, while maintaining safe and sanitary conditions.
  • To maintain departmental programs which assure full compliance with pre-established Federal, State, Corporate, Plant sanitation, and safety standards.
  • To maintain working programs to minimize transit and/or storage damage within established guidelines.
  • To control accuracy in shipments and goods received so that product loss and penalties are minimal and traceability maintained.
  • To manage our structured departmental cost reduction/improvement programs to meet or beat our annual savings and productivity improvement targets.
  • To meet department variable and period budgets and supervise the department in such a manner to ensure the highest level of efficiency while meeting budgets.
  • To assure effective labor relations and consistent contract and policy administration while promoting a work environment conducive to people improvement and motivation of the production work force.
  • To train and motivate subordinates in the performance of their duties, develop their Total Production Manufacturing (TPM) capabilities, lead AM teams, develop their management talents, and encourage creativity at the supervisory level so that a constant supply of qualified supervisors are available for positions of greater responsibility.
  • To keep abreast of new developments that impact the Shipping Department including new products, modifications, and processes which might lend themselves to ensuring a more efficient operation.
  • To actively take part in team meetings, relative to Product Availability, Sales, Marketing, Group Team meetings, and the associated customer visits.
  • Actively support Plant and Shipping cost savings projects.
  • Responsible for assuring Warehouse Management System traceability of 99.6%
  • To meet all productivity targets in material handling as well as Packaging and Palletizer uptime.
  • Ensure adherence to transportation route guide and optimize transportation requirements.
  • To meet all customer service targets in the delivery of finished goods


The incumbent must have a mature business attitude, be a skilled administrator, be capable of identifying opportunities, be a strategic thinker and problem solver and have good planning abilities. Above average communication and human relations skills are required to motivate and secure staff and line support/cooperation. The incumbent is responsible for the development of high potential members of the department, while motivating others to perform at the top of their individual capabilities. The incumbent must also have a thorough understanding of the labor agreement and be skilled in the principles and fundamentals of employee relations and motivation of the work force.

  • This position requires a college degree or equivalent work experience
  • Requires flexibility in shift assignment, as this position will likely be on 2nd or 3rd shift
