Overall Description: As a Senior Member of Technical Staff (SMTS) you will be required to develop 5G/5G-Advanced/6G RAN wireless technology solutions, evaluate these solutions using system and/or link level simulation tools, and contribute to cellular standards organizations such as O-RAN, 3GPP, and ATIS Next Generation Alliance. You will also be recognized in the company as a technical leader within this area and may work in a team that leads projects to provide system requirements and technical expertise across multiple groups as it relates to AT&T 5G/5G-Advanced/6G cellular networks.

A strong foundation in wireless physical layer communication theory and digital signal processing and experience in system requirement generation are a core requirement. Practical knowledge of wireless system modeling, link level abstraction, link budget development is desirable. Application of AI/ML techniques to solve RAN-related problems is also a desirable skill. The individual will have worked or can demonstrate an ability to work on projects of high complexity, where detailed modeling of a wireless communication system and analysis of data requires in-depth evaluation of various factors, using knowledge and expertise derived from strong educational background and progressive experience.

The individual should demonstrate experience and deep understanding of 3GPP based 4G/5G cellular systems and Radio Access Networks (RAN). They shall be recognized by their peers as a technical leader in this area and demonstrate the ability to develop new technologies/solutions, co-lead projects, and provide strategic leadership. The individual must have experience and expertise in the area of system modeling, implementation, and evaluation of new wireless technologies on simulation platforms.

Overall Purpose: Develop and assess overall technology solutions for next-generation cellular networks and help determine various critical requirements in hardware, software, and signal processing needed for such networks. Contribute requirements and proposals into O-RAN, 3GPP and ATIS Next Generation Alliance standards organizations.

Key Roles and Responsibilities: This position will be responsible for creation and development of new advanced wireless concepts/technologies and evaluation of their potential for standardization and commercialization in AT&T network in the future. The candidate will work on physical layer concepts for next generation wireless networks, including those related to channel coding, information theory, mmWave, massive MIMO, wireless channel characterization and modeling, hybrid beamforming, multi-point transmission, etc. The candidate shall evaluate said technologies using simulation platforms and prototype reference hardware designs as deemed necessary. Using their experience with wireless technologies and standards organizations, the individual is also expected to advise other AT&T organizations during commercial deployment of 5G/5G-Advanced networks.

Job Contribution: Contribute towards the overall AT&T technology strategy for 5G Radio Access Networks. This includes (but not limited to) developing novel and advanced wireless technologies for future 3GPP and O-RAN releases, generating intellectual property, developing HW and SW reference design for 5G RAN, implementing/simulating them on AT&T testbed/simulation platforms. Contribute through own development towards the advancement of 5G technology for AT&T with global reach to industry applications. Contributes in standards bodies such as 3GPP, O-RAN, and ATIS Next Generation Alliance.

Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of cellular wireless systems and the wireless physical layer, including in-depth experience with wireless system modeling and simulation. Thorough understanding and experience in signal processing, wireless communication, information theory, error correction coding, multi-antenna transmission and reception, massive MIMO, MIMO channel models, multi-carrier modulation, advanced receiver design and interference cancellation. Good understanding of 3GPP based 4G/5G systems. Experience and familiarity with RAN protocols such as LTE, LTE Advanced, LTE Pro, and 5G NR with emphasis on L1 and L2 expertise. Experience with testing and trial activity of new and advanced wireless technologies related to 4G and 5G systems is a plus. Experience with applying AI/ML techniques to solve RAN problems is desirable. Experience with application of these skills and concepts toward research, development, and testing of new technology, concepts and ideas for wireless networks.

Education: Masters (required) or PhD (highly preferred) in an approved field such as Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or Mathematics from an accredited university.

Experience: PhD in an approved field or Masters in an approved field with 2 years of relevant experience.

Analysis/Problem Solving: Can solve complex, critical problems related to significant and unique issues at the system and unit level. Ability to use extensive research and interpretative thinking, utilizing innovative methods to develop solutions.

Communication Skills: Can explain and provide technical expertise to peers across the company. Actively promote good working relationships and develop mutually beneficial strategic alliances with infrastructure and device vendors.

Programming/Software Skills: Candidate must have experience with development of simulation platform using some or all the following programming languages and software development environments: MATLAB, C/C++, Python, etc.
