:The Registered Nurse supervises the delivery of nursing care provided by professional and support nursing staff on a designated unit. Care is provided in a manner consistent with the philosophy and objectives of Fairmount Behavioral Health System and the ANA Standards of Practice for Psychiatric Mental Health Care and the Nursing Board of Pennsylvania. The RN prescribes, coordinates, and delegates care utilizing the nursing process which is integrated into the multidisciplinary treatment team plan of care. The RN is accountable for nursing care activities on a shift basis and is responsible for promoting and enhancing professional nursing practice on the unit.:

:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description. The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position. Staff must demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to varied populations including children, adolescents, and adults.

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program. BSN preferred.

Experience: One (1) year prior psychiatric nursing experience preferred, prior experience working with specific psychiatric patient population preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Licensure and registration by the Pennsylvania Board of Nurse Examiners as a registered nurse. Certification in CPR, AED and First Aid.

Knowledge: Must possess knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing processes, therapeutic relationships and processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting, behavior and crisis management.

Job Specific Responsibilities: 1. Coordinates delivery of nursing care and delegates work through nursing assignment sheet.

2. Completes the nursing assessment within 8 hours on all admissions, including the assessment of medical conditions and pain.

3. Uses assessment data appropriately to identify target problems or behaviors during hospitalization.

4. Completes and documents appropriate re-assessment of the patients target behaviors and response to nursing care no less than once daily for assigned patients.

5. Formulates an individualized plan of care for each patient based on assessment and reassessment data that is focused on target behaviors.

6. Conducts rounds once per 8 hour shifts and twice per 12 hour shift.

7. Participates in patient activities and is present within the milieu of the unit.

8. Responds to all medical emergencies.

9. Responds appropriately to psychiatric emergencies.

10. Meets policy requirements for all restrictive intervention documentation.

11. Administers medication accurately and has knowledge of its actions and implications.

12. Able to assess, provide and interpret age related data obtained from the patient or medical record.

13. Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to communication, environmental and developmental needs of specific patient population.

14. Knowledgeable of considerations made when administering medications to children, adolescents, adults and older adults.

15. Completes all nursing documentation as per policy.

16. Completes night shift audits (Night shift responsibility).

17. Provides real time supervision and direction to Psychiatric Technicians.

17. Other assignments as requested by Nursing Supervisor or Nurse Manager.

Trainings Competencies: Handle With Care, CPR, Verbal De-escalation, Age Specific Training, Therapeutic Boundaries, Hand Hygiene, Assessment and Prevention of Risk, Patient Observation Rounds, Therapeutic Milieu, Informed Consent, Infection Control, Patient Bathroom Competencies, Code of Conduct, Group Expectations, Fire Safety, All Safety Test, Clinical Staff Safety Test, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, Nursing Medication Suffixes, Patient Safety Discharge Process, WAIVE testing and any additional assignment assigned by the facility.

Environmental Conditions: Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, and other hazardous waste. General hospital environment.

Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Physical agility to manage patients. Push, pull, and lift up to 40 pounds. Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping. Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment urine drug screen.
