Position Summary: The R&D Scientist is responsible for contributing to Division technical initiatives focused on polymer raw materials, new product and process development. The scientist will plan, research, analyze, design, execute, manage, develop and test materials, component parts, prototypes and manufacturing processes necessary to develop new or to improve existing products. The scientist is responsible for developing solutions to material science problems of difficult scope and complexity using scientific principles. The scientist will work in close collaboration with marketing, product engineering, and manufacturing engineering functions to achieve project goals and meet strategic business objectives.

Essential Functions: Technical/R&D Leadership Develop new, innovative materials, products, or process technology platforms to drive profitable growth and maintain competitive advantage in Division key markets with premier customers. Research new technologies, trends, intellectual property and applied sciences that help improve and evolve the Divisions current product and technology portfolio. Develop working hypotheses, design experiments, develop experimental plans and issue proposals to support value propositions and to gain new understandings of material, product, or process performance. Perform literature and patent searches to guide focused experimentation. New Product/Process Development and Quality Improvement Develop new products and manufacturing technologies through research, ideation, concept development, experimental design, formulating activities, lab trials, testing and structured analysis. Apply material characterization techniques to advance understanding of structure-property-processing relationships and apply that understanding to improve existing products and processes. Utilize technical resources to develop materials, test methods and quality control measures for innovative new materials and processes. Provide technical problem solving consultation for root cause analysis and troubleshooting of polymer science related manufacturing and quality issues. Hands-on ability to set up, adjust and operate a wide variety of polymer analytical and polymer processing equipment focused primarily on extrusion of hose and tubing Project Management Leads projects and participates in cross-functional project teams. Uses stage-gate project management systems as required. Summarize experimental strategies and data analysis in written reports and presentations for communication with peers, customers, and various levels of management. Internal/External Networking, Collaboration & Communication Work and interact effectively and professionally with others throughout various levels of the organization. Actively build a network of peers with similar interests and complementary experience. Maintain relationships with key suppliers, equipment manufacturers, and customers. Establish and build external contacts at universities, laboratories, and technology start-ups to collaborate on advanced material synthesis, characterization, processing and product applications. Patent and IP Generation Contribute to Parkers IP by frequently generating patents and trade secrets associated with the stated work. Mentorship Mentor to others by identifying key strengths and improvement areas. Actively plan and participate in the technical, business, interpersonal and professional development skills of other Division members Environmental, Health & Safety Promote a safe working environment. Comply with Environmental, Health & Safety initiatives as required.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Polymer Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or demonstrated experience in a related technical discipline. 1-2 years of industrial research experience with specific focus on polymer-based material development, structure-property relationships and polymer processing. Demonstrated ability to research, investigate, propose and implement new technologies Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with a proven track record of publishing technical reports, patents, trade secrets and scientific journals. Working knowledge of managed stage-gate processes for new product and process development. Proficiency with DOE, statistical analysis tools and polymer analysis applications. Demonstrates specialized scientific competence supporting larger projects and consistently meets established project deadlines and time constraints. Strong interpersonal skills, effective listener, open to learning and responds positively to frequent change. Ability to work effectively engaged in small or large cross-functional teams with people of diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated skills in planning, resource and time management, record keeping and goal completion. Must be a US Citizen.
