Job Description

The production planner is primarily responsible for creating cost-effective weekly finished goods production schedules that support plant customer service and inventory objectives. This role is also responsible for coordinating the packaging materials required to meet the finished goods production schedule. This role will also serve as a back-up resource for other planners in the department.

This position works closely with the plant finished goods deployer to monitor and address inventory issues at the Distribution Centers. Must build or have strong working relationships with other internal groups such as Operations, Quality, Finance and Shipping. The production planner also serves as the plant liaison for co-packers, Corporate Supply Chain and R&D.

Regular activities include:

  1. Construct weekly production schedules and any required revisions, utilizing the SAP Planning System (PPDS) to optimize production.
  2. Utilize the MRP (Materials Requirement Planning) in SAP to ensure that materials are/will be in the house to support production schedules and changes.
  3. Communicating daily with operations about production targets, schedule changes, new product introductions, line trials, product availability, material issues etc., to ensure proper execution of plans.
  4. Assist with the managing of obsolete inventory, scrap, version changes, and supplier quality issues for assigned packaging materials.
  5. Communicate with the Chicago Supply Chain, Demand Planning, and Distribution Centers to keep abreast of deals, promotional activity and special projects.
  6. Understand production capacity constraints and be able to project when leveling of the product should occur because of all these constraints. Communicate and coordinate all leveling of product.
  7. Make decisions regarding production changes, abnormal product moves and movement of customer orders to minimize product cuts.


  1. College graduate in related field or equivalent experience.
  2. Supply Chain experience in planning, purchasing or distribution of the product.
  3. Excellent oral communication skills (to all levels).
  4. Comfortable presenting in front of small to medium-sized groups.
  5. Sound project management skills effectively handle multiple tasks at a time, meeting all commitments.
  6. Analytical skills are needed to analyse production capacity and costs impacts of different production options.
  7. Need to be completely at ease using computers and proficient in Excel and Word.
  8. Self-starter. Able to function with a minimum amount of supervision.
  9. The high degree of organization skills and attention to detail.
  10. Be willing to be on call 24 hours a day.
