BioMedicine Design (BMD) is seeking a motivated and experienced scientist to join a protein purification and analytics group supporting the Biotherapeutics portfolio of Pfizer, Inc. in La Jolla, CA. Responsibilities will include protein purification and analytics work, including the hands-on execution of purification and/or characterization for biotherapeutic leads, protein reagents, immunogens, and panning reagents. Expertise in protein chromatography, protein concentration and formulation, and cutting-edge protein analytical techniques will be key to this position. The ideal candidate will be highly proficient in the design of optimal processes that are consistent with team material needs for quantity (milligram to gram scale) and purity.



**Job Description:**



+ Perform all stages of protein purification and analytics for the production of biotherapeutics leads, protein reagents, immunogens, and panning reagents.

+ Assume a leadership role for the BioMedicine Design portfolio by acting as Engineering Lead for at least one biotherapeutics discovery-stage project

+ Design, assess and troubleshoot purification and analytics protocols.

+ Deliver protein preparations and data analysis packages to project teams in a timely manner.

+ Present results regularly at team meetings

+ Perform diligent and timely note-keeping and work process tracking



**Basic Qualifications:**



+ PhD in molecular biology/biochemistry/immunology/cell biology or a related discipline is required with 4+ years of relevant R&D experience.

+ Extensive experience in protein purification using a variety of methods (e.g. affinity, SEC, IMAC, ion exchange, HIC, and hydroxyapatite chromatographies; ultrafiltration), instrumentation (FPLC, HPLC, AKTA) and software (e.g., Unicorn, Chemstation)

+ Strong expertise in design, execution, and troubleshooting of purification processes.

+ Experience in protein engineering for the design of new antigens, novel biologics formats, and clinical candidates

+ Strong expertise in characterization of protein preparations using SDS-PAGE, HPLC (SEC), endotoxin analysis, and Western blot analysis

+ Experience with antibody and biotherapeutic purification and characterization and a working knowledge of antibody molecules

+ Experience with data analysis and presentation software

+ Excellent written and oral communication skills

+ The individual should be scientifically creative and driven by a willingness to embrace innovation within drug discovery and an eagerness to challenge and meet aggressive timelines

+ The ability to work closely with other group members within teams is essential



**Preferred Qualifications:**



+ 2+ years of postdoctoral experience is highly preferred along with 3+ years R&D experience in an industry setting

+ Experience with LC/MS characterization of protein samples, especially for antibodies and other biotherapeutics would be desirable

+ Experience with the chemistry of protein - small molecule conjugation is a plus

+ Knowledge of protease biology and biochemistry is a plus

+ Knowledge of protein structural biology is a plus
