An essential component of Pfizer at Sandwich, our Pharmaceutical Sciences function supports Pfizer's early to late stage portfolio translating new chemical entities into commercial drug products. Pharmaceutical Sciences at Sandwich is a fully integrated CMC capability that encompasses state of the art active pharmaceutical ingredient synthesis and drug product design as well as a cGMP manufacturing and clinical trials supply chain. Within Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Drug Product Design department utilises expertise in materials science, formulation design and process understanding to deliver innovative new medicines.

+ **Role summary** The senior scientist role is an entry level position in Pfizer's Drug Product Design department. The candidate must have deep interest in applying the principles of physical chemistry to the design of drug delivery systems. They will be expected to respond to the challenges of bridging solid state and solution thermodynamics for heterocyclic organic molecules and seek to understand their interactions with biological interfaces and multi-component drug product matrices. The selected candidate is expected to utilise principles of physical, biophysical, organic chemistry to design drug products and to solve challenging scientific problems in the in vitro and in vivo performance of drug products. **Role responsibilities**

+ Be the catalyst to advance the utilisation of solution and solid state thermodynamic principles governing physical processes in drug product development and develop predictive tools to demonstrate the kinetic understanding of such physical processes.

+ Utilise and apply the principles of physics and physical chemistry to characterize and understand the thermodynamics and kinetic processes of drug species in solution to enable design of a variety of drug delivery systems and predict the in vitro and in vivo performance.

+ Utilise or develop mathematical models to predict dissolution of solid particles in aqueous solutions and precipitation of particles from supersaturated aqueous solutions of heterocyclic organic molecules.

+ Assist in utilising and / or developing leading edge in vitro and in silico capabilities for the design of complex drug delivery systems to provide desired pharmacological outcomes for patients.

+ Work in multidisciplinary teams composed of scientists with experience and expertise in pharmaceutical sciences, biology, pharmacology, synthetic organic chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, etc.

+ Develop hypotheses, design experiments and provide interpretation of data to assist in resolving challenging physicochemical problems associated with drug delivery systems.

+ Guide the development or implement computational predictive tools for assessment of self-assembling systems in solution, long term physical stability of drug molecules in multi-component systems, and in vitro performance attributes of complex drug products.

+ Develop strategic collaborations with academic and industrial researchers for addressing gaps in fundamental or applied science.

+ Publish research in reputed scientific journals and give presentations at national and international conferences.

+ Contribute to regulatory submissions by providing succinct descriptions of well characterised and modelled drug delivery systems, their manufacture and their performance.

**Basic qualifications**

+ Recent PhD with 0-3 year post-doctoral experience in Physical Chemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, Biophysics, Physics, Physical Organic Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Sciences or Biochemistry.

+ Candidates with experience in allied disciplines may also apply with the following qualifications: PhD, MSc, or BSc with relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

+ Experience in measuring and interpreting thermodynamic data; measurement and utilisation of data associated with kinetics of physicochemical processes including development of mathematical models as well as modelling and interpretation of simulation data.

**Preferred qualifications**

+ Experience in designing and conducting experiments; generating and interpreting experimental data; solving problems by combining data with mathematical modelling of underlying phenomenon.

+ Experience in the use of appropriate modelling and computer software and computer programming languages e.g. Matlab, C++, Python for problem solving.

+ Strong organisational skills, interpersonal, strong written, and verbal communication skills.

+ Ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects and activities while meeting tight deadlines.

+ Proactive in problem-solving and be able to independently manage timelines and priorities.

+ Ability to work independently to drive project forward as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

+ Ability to propose new ideas / hypothesis to enable design of drug delivery technologies, their manufacturing processes and evaluate the performance of the technology through in vitro and in silico tools.
