The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The department now employs 900 people who work at the award-winning University of Washington Medical Center (ranked among the top medical centers in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report), Harborview Medical Center (the region's only Level I Trauma center, known for innovations and excellence in trauma care and its centers of emphasis: Trauma, Burn, Neurosciences, AIDS/STD CARER, and mentally- and medically- vulnerable populations.), and many other clinical and research facilities in the area. The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary/hourly, day shift, PHLEBOTOMIST.

  • Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection
  • Verify patient identity before performing collection
  • Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages
  • Instruct patients on proper collection of urine specimens
  • Perform laboratory-testing procedures such as Prothrombin time, and Whole blood glucose testing
  • Prioritize to work effectively in a fast paced clinical environment
  • Assist in the orientation and training of students and new employees
  • Support service and UWMC goals, service efficiency, and effectiveness through such activities as: participating in problem solving, demonstrating support for policies, sharing expertise, and contributing to project work and committees
  • Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the laboratory and other departments
  • Communicate clearly, directly and on a timely basis
  • Open to receiving direction and asking for assistance when needed
  • Keep abreast of safety procedures including fire plan, disaster drills, evacuation routes, etc.
  • Demonstrate a courteous, respectful, professional attitude, and behavior at all times
  • Perform related duties as required

    High school graduation AND completion of a phlebotomy course OR equivalent education/experience. 

    Legal Requirement: Obtain State of Washington certification as a Health Care Assistant Level A within sixty days of employment date. 

    Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy Certification with the Washington State Department of Health.

  • Will need to work holidays and weekends
  • Lab Medicine employees are considered essential staff and as such are required to report to work during inclement weather
  • Lab Medicine employees may be required to work in any of the department locations including but not limited to HMC, UWMC, Roosevelt, SCCA, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCH, etc.
