Responsible for planning and preparing for the surgical procedure and assisting the surgeon. Responsible for sterilization of surgical equipment and to assemble scheduled and emergency case carts.

Demonstrates correct Materials Management (instruments, sponges, needles, etc.)

Displays various transfer techniques with sharps, as needed.

Counting of surgical objects as required per policy.

Accountability and care of surgical specimens.

Consistently practices procedures to protect self and others and adheres to OSHA exposure plan guidelines.

Demonstrates knowledge of the surgery environment.

Using the correct Personal Protective Equipment as needed.

Having and practicing the skills necessary to function within all surgery specialties. (Ortho, Neuro, General, Vascular, OB/GYN, Plastic, Cysto, Uro and Opth.

Scrubs for operative procedures demonstrating good aseptic technique, knowledge of perioperative safety and infection control guidelines, and appropriate handling of instruments, suture, and specimens.

Demonstrates competency in assisting the nurse in the care of the patient by assisting with patient prep, patient positioning, and transportation of the patient.

Recognizes changes in the patients health status and is prepared to initiate or assist with emergency action.

Participates in the teaching of technical skills to other surgical technicians and surgical technician students.

Ensures all needed items are immediately available as appropriate in the sterile field or in the procedure room prior to the start of the procedure.

Promptly responds to requests for assistance, calls for count, specimen identification, and correction of breaks in aseptic technique.

Ensure instruments are available for the specialty cases urology, general, orthopedic, neuro-surgery, dental, etc.

Alert Sterile Processing and anticipate of instruments needing to be turned over quickly.

Maintain Physician Preference Cards up to date.

Ensure that specialty supplies are available at all times that is communicated with supply chain to coordinate have instruments/ supplies are available.

Be knowledgeable about the instrumentation needed for case volume of the service line.

Performs other duties as required and assigned.

Job Requirements

Certification as a surgical technologist (CST) required.

1-2 years of scrubbing experience in an operating room setting.

BLS certification required.

Good communication skills.

Must successfully complete the pre-employment assessment.

Basic computer skills required.
