Sodexo is seeking an Operating Engineer for a Research and Development (R&D) Laboratory Company located in Boston, MA.

Job Essential Functions:

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and conduct all required periodic and preventive maintenance on all engine room equipment to include, but not limited to, boilers, chillers, pumps, electric motors, water softeners, electric generators and hot water generators.
  • Keep and maintain accurate operation records.
  • Record and report completed repairs and items that require further attention.


Required Education:

  • Technical Degree in Mechanics, Electricity or Refrigeration with 1-3 years of experience required or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Associate Degree preferred
  • Commonwealth of Massachusetts 1st or 2nd Class Engineer
  • Industrial Wastewater Treatment Operator License Grade 1 or higher.


Required Experience:                                                   

  • 10+ years of experience in utilities operation and/or maintenance is required.
  • Previous experience working within the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Medical Device, Food and Beverage, and Healthcare Industries with thorough working knowledge of cGMPs is preferred.
  • Must have ability to maintain records of activities.
  • Ability to perform basic computer operations and communicate via email.
  • Experience with Siemens Apogee and/or Equivalent Building Automation System.


Specific Duties, Activities & Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine tasks relative to equipment operations as directed.
  • Operate plant controls as instructed by Chief Engineer.
  • Performs minor preventative maintenance of systems as assigned.
  • Assists in maintaining records of equipment operations.
  • Must have ability to maintain records of activities.
  • Performs required tests on purified water systems, closed cooling water, etc.
  • Adjusts and adds required chemicals to maintain water systems within guidelines.
  • Maintains log of water treatment systems.
  • Keep work area clean, neat, and orderly
  • Responsible for the operation of the demineralizer and associated equipment.
  • Lines up, starts, stops, and secures equipment as required.
  • Perform assigned facility inspections and due diligence efforts, reporting on as found conditions impacting satisfactory client occupancy and operations.
  • Knows and abides by all safety rules and regulations.
  • The utility operator will operate the critical and non-critical utilities equipment to assure their continuous operation on a 24/7 schedule basis.
  • Able to work extra hours, at night or on weekends and irregular shifts.
  • Able to respond to emergency calls.
  • Able to support other departments or projects according to business needs.
  • Strictly follow companys safety and cGMP policies and procedures as applicable.
  • Any other duties as required by the supervisor to support normal operations at the department.

Position Summary

The primary objective of the reliability engineer is to identify and manage asset reliability risks that could adversely affect plant or business operations. This broad primary role may have a focus on one or more of the following areas: loss elimination, risk management and life cycle asset management (LCAM).

  • Participates as a subject matter expert in the development of criteria for and evaluation of equipment and technical MRO suppliers and technical maintenance service providers. Develops acceptance tests and inspection criteria. Including:
    • Asset utilization
    • Overall equipment effectiveness
    • Remaining useful life
    • Other parameters that define operating condition, reliability and costs of assets  
  • As a member of the Facilities team provides Subject Matter expertise to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, facilities, controls and safety/security systems     
  • Conducts regular audits and inspections of Assets to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, facilities, controls and safety/security systems.    
  • Utilizes data analysis techniques that can include the following. The results are used in development of the design and development of Asset Maintenance Plans
      • Statistical process control
      • Reliability modeling and prediction
      • Fault tree analysis
      • Weibull analysis
      • Six Sigma (6σ) methodology
      • Root cause analysis (RCA) and root cause failure analysis (RCFA)
      • Failure reporting, analysis and corrective action system (FRACAS) 

Experience in supporting the development of and following a Reliability Centered Maintenance Plan for a critical environment such as Manufacturing (Pharmaceutical environment, Life Science).  Requires project management experience to manage multiple on-going projects within multiple work streams.

Qualifications & Requirements

Basic Education Requirement - Associate's Degree or equivalent experience

Basic Functional Experience - 3 years of engineering experience, with a focus in reliability or project engineering; similar experience working with/on Facilities or Utilities Maintenance teams
