River Oaks Hospital, located in metropolitan New Orleans, Louisiana, is a private psychiatric facility for adults, adolescents and children. Since 1970, River Oaks has established a tradition of excellence in the treatment of acute psychiatric illness, dual diagnosis, alcohol and drug detoxification, trauma based disorders, compulsive behaviors, and eating disorders, River Oaks has provided quality treatment to service individuals suffering from mental illness, and/or addictive disorders. Situated on a 14-acre campus, services are available at all levels of care (inpatient, day or partial hospitalization, outpatient, and intensive outpatient).

River Oaks Hospital is seeking a dynamic and talented REGISTERED NURSE to assist and take direction from the unit RN in the care of patients; participate in patient and family teaching and works cooperatively with other patient care personnel while maintaining a high level of quality service to patients of all ages found within the scope of services.


  • Orients the patient to following within 8 hours of transfer or admission: program staff, living quarters, other patients, patients rights, and procedures of the program.
  • Searches patients belongings for sharps, valuables, medications, and other items not allowed upon admission and/or transfer.
  • Assess the patient initially within acceptable timeframe and ongoing throughout the shift; documents evidence of assessments through rounds and within the medical record.
  • Supervises the counselors participation in gathering data for the nursing assessment and initial treatment plan.
  • Performs an initial nursing assessment appropriately and accurately for admission of patient by verbal order.
  • Presents milieu evaluation at initial staffing within 10 days of admission (or half the estimated length of stay if less than 10 days).
  • Formulates treatment plans from information obtained in the initial staffing within time frame established by the program.
  • Initiates appropriate interventions in response to the psychosocial status of the patient.
  • Promotes interdisciplinary cooperation and communication.
  • Assesses the educational and vocational skills of the patient and assists in planning realistic goals in these areas.
  • Observes and assesses the physical status of the patient on an ongoing basis.
  • Administers medications appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform treatments related to the patients physical needs.
  • Documents immediate interventions as soon as they occur.
  • Writes milieu progress summaries according to program description.
  • Provides patient/family education related to the patients physical and psychosocial needs upon discharge.
  • Initiates evaluation and prompt intervention in case of accidents or physical illness.
  • Records and reports assessments and interventions in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and legible charting.
  • Cooperates in planning, implementing and supporting Nursing and Administration decisions.
  • Willingly to rotates call schedule.
  • Attends Clinical Supervision as outlined in Nursing Service policy.
  • Attends all required in-services annually:
    • Fire, disaster, and safety and updates
    • Infection Control and updates
    • Administrative policies and procedures
    • Crisis Intervention and updates
    • CPR
    • Others as assigned

  • CUSTOMERS SERVED: Adolescents (age 12-17) and Adults (ages 18+)
    Patients; families; direct-care service providers; external funding sources; service, accreditation, and licensing agencies; external case managers; school districts (if applicable); other staff and members within the community
Job Requirements


  • Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing; current licensure with the Louisiana State Board of Nurses.
  • Ability to clearly speak, write and understand verbal and written English. Selected skills/credentials as defined by the departments scope of services.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Previous experience in a psychiatric hospital or related human service field preferred.
