River Oaks Hospital, located in metropolitan New Orleans, Louisiana, is a private psychiatric facility for adults, adolescents and children. Since 1970, River Oaks has established a tradition of excellence in the treatment of acute psychiatric illness, dual diagnosis, alcohol and drug detoxification, trauma based disorders, compulsive behaviors, and eating disorders, River Oaks has provided quality treatment to service individuals suffering from mental illness, and/or addictive disorders. Situated on a 14-acre campus, services are available at all levels of care (inpatient, day or partial hospitalization, outpatient, and intensive outpatient).

River Oaks Hospital is seeking a dynamic and talented ADMISSIONS PC/ MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN to assist and take direction from the Admissions RN in the care of patients; participate in patient and family teaching and works cooperatively with other patient care personnel while maintaining a high level of quality service to patients of all ages found within the scope of services.


  • Once patient(s) arrive in intake, Intake personnel will call for assistance.
  • Take vital signs of patient upon arrival.
  • Assist Admissions Registered Nurse (RN) with two-person patient searches per River Oaks policy upon arrival to the unit.
  • Search patient belongings. Items allowed on unit are to be placed in brown paper bags or left in patient belongings and secured in property room when patient arrives on unit, or placed in property bags and given to nursing staff on unit, or confiscated as indicated in the River Oaks Contraband Policy & Procedure. All patient belongings are to be labeled accordingly; Once patient and belongings are searched the patient and belongings must stay in a secured area. They are not to be allowed back out in the lobby.
  • Complete patient rounding log once patient is admitted, until they arrive on the unit.
  • Once admit is complete, Intake staff must review all documentation and clear the patient to be brought back to the unit. Patients are not to leave admissions without Intake staff approval.
  • Escort patient and patient belongings back to unit. Patient belongings are to be given directly to unit staff member and placed in a secure location
  • If there are not patients waiting to be admitted: Patient rounds are to be completed on every unit and prepare charts for pending admits for the day.
  • Perform any filing on each unit that needs to be completed from prior shift
  • Complete Daily Safety Checklists on each unit if not completed.
  • Check PC designated drawer in Intake to ensure there is adequate supply of brown bags/property bags/property check in forms.

  • In addition to these duties, this Admissions PC/Mental Health Tech will be available to fill any Unit vacancies as needed.
  • Performs all Nursing duties of a PC/Mental Health Tech while filling a vacancy on a unit, which includes, coordinating the care of patients on the specific unit assigned.
  • Orients the patient during their transfer or admission process within 8 hrs; introduction to staff, living quarters, other patients, patients rights, and procedures of the program.
  • Makes contact with family members, provides information, support, and orientation to program as part of the admission process.
  • Conducts rounds, continuously monitors the patient to provide a safe, therapeutic milieu within the least restrictive environment.
  • Observes for untoward symptoms and patients response to emotional, behavioral, physical, psychiatric, neurological and social interventions.
  • Administers regimes as ordered by the physician under the supervision of the RN.
  • Assists school age patients with transition in school either at River Oaks or outside facility.
  • Documents immediate interventions as soon as they occur.
  • Completes milieu component of discharge documentation within 8 hours of discharge.
  • Communicates with other departments in the hospital appropriately.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and legible charting, documenting rounds, property check, etc.,
  • Able to provide detailed oral shift report under the supervision of the RN to provide continuity of care from shift to shift.
  • Interacts with peers in an open, supportive manner; demonstrates willingness to assist as needed.
  • Cooperates in planning, implementing and supporting nursing and administration decisions.
  • Accepts assignments to all programs as needed.
  • Attends meetings as outlined in Nursing Service policy.
  • Attends all required in-services annually:
    • Fire, disaster, and safety and updates
    • Infection Control and updates
    • Administrative policies and procedures
    • Crisis Intervention and updates
    • CPR

CUSTOMERS SERVED: Adolescents (age 12-17) and Adults (ages 18+)

Patients; families; direct-care service providers; external funding sources; service, accreditation, and licensing agencies; external case managers; school districts (if applicable); other staff and members within the community.

Job Requirements


  • High School Diploma; Bachelors degree in a related field or related experience in psychiatric field preferred.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Previous experience in a psychiatric hospital or related human service field preferred.
  • Availability for DAY/NIGHTS, PRN, as needed, 8:00am-8:00pm, 8:00pm-8:00am
