The Medical Assistant (MA) is anon-exempt position responsible for performing a variety of duties depending on whether it is a small clinic, large medical practice, multi-clinic, or a specialty office for Northwest Texas Physician Group. The MA may be involved in both the clinical and administrative areas including assisting physicians with patient care and handling clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. The MA fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to departmental protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms. The MA fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities that vary according to state law, which may include medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping and autoclaving; checking vital signs; physical examination preparations; clinical pharmacology; drug administration through various routes including injections; prescription verifications with physician's orders; minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; therapeutic modalities; instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care; laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA-waived testing; capillary punctures and venipunctures; specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum; electrocardiography including mounting, emergency triage, and first aid. The MA provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical services. The MA may be assigned to specific medical specialty department (e.g., pediatrics). Medical Assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice in the laboratory.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Proof of successful completion from an nationally accredited institution with a CMA certification through the AAMA or a RMA certification from the AMT
  3. Minimum of one year experience working in a medical facility as a Medical Assistant and/or documented evidence of externship completed in a medical office performing electrocardiogram (EKG), vital signs, venipuncture, capillary, and injections
  4. Must possess current BLS certification from theAmerican Heart Associationupon hire and maintain certification throughout employment
  5. Type minimum of 20 words per minute
  6. Good communication and interpersonal skills
  7. Computer experience recommended
  8. Bi-lingual ability desirable

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Ability to read and write in English
  2. Ability to communicate with patients, families, staff, physicians, support agencies, vendors and others
  3. Ability to remain calm and composed under stress
  4. Ability to evaluate and interpret information and make independent decisions
  5. Ability to tolerate low noise levels for prolonged periods
  6. Ability to determine colors
  7. Ability to respond to pages, telephones and other auditory stimulation
  8. Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  9. Ability to function when exposed to infectious organisms, agents and toxic chemicals
  10. Bending and lifting (minimum of 30 lbs), grasping, fine hand/eye coordination, pushing and pulling repeatedly, twisting, squatting and stooping
  11. Utilizes correct technique to prevent needle stick
