The Lead IT Database Architect will provide development, communication, guidance and assistance with regards to the organization's technology architecture and application plan, including the components required to support it.  This will include the design and optimization of databases, such as access and design methodology, documentation and statistical analysis to improve security, data flow and performance.  The Lead IT Database Architect will be responsible for coordinating and leading strategic initiatives across the enterprise including server and storage, database, business applications and clinical applications.  This position will be expected to deliver documents and troubleshoot databases as well as lead the teams in an effective and efficient-driven direction.  This position is responsible for providing expertise and direction to Sr. Leadership when discussing strategic project, database and application initiatives.


Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Accountable for enterprise-wide system performance with regards to databases and the underlying components
  • Proactively collaborates with the IT department and related business units to increase system efficiencies, document application architecture and define long-term design strategies
  • Collaboration surrounding database and application development, planning, and implementation includes but is not limited to Optum Technology, Optum Information Risk Management and Optum Data Management areas
  • Provide direction and guidance to Optum infrastructure teams with regards to database best practices and enterprise guidelines, strategies, and initiatives with the goal of enhancing system performance and documentation while creating a cohesive environment
  • Analyze business requirements and ensure that solutions meet established database and application policies and controls.  Design and document IT database and application plans/architecture for the enterprise as well as the larger Optum IRM and related teams.  This may also encompass security with regards to databases and applications
  • Serves as key leader and subject matter expert on OptumCare leading-edge projects that are particularly vulnerable to security risk, performance impacts and operational challenges during development and operations
  • Facilitate the design/deployment reviews with department leads and executive leadership to ensure adherence to organizational policies
  • Partner with business owners, application teams, and the broader Optum Technology teams to define/enhance IT solutions in order to meet both business needs and performance, operational and security requirements
  • Review on an ongoing schedule existing databases and systems to provide feedback to applicable technology teams on recommended process and system improvement and policy changes related to IT database and application architecture
  • Demonstrate knowledge of applicable IT industry database standards, application principles, hardware and software controls, and emerging database and application issues
  • Serves as a key resource to work with various technical teams to diagnose and troubleshoot Tier 3 (complex and/or critical) issues with database and application considerations 
  • Sits on the enterprise Technical Review Board to identify and assist to mitigate risks where appropriate
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned
