The Junior Research Scientist will support public domain research predominantly funded by external grants from entities such as National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Optum Center for Wellbeing Research (OCWR) is organized and staffed to support grant research end-to-end, including the process of applying for grants, management of grants, and the promotion of research findings. The Junior Research Scientist will work closely with Principal Scientists to manage study implementation, maintain budgets, design participant recruitment and data collection materials, monitor study activities, and oversee research quality. Junior Research Scientist will also conduct data analysis and assist with manuscript writing as well as assist with preparing grant applications and project proposals and internal projects supporting business goals as required. This position will include grant manager, data analysis, and junior research scientist responsibilities.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with scientific leadership, oversee and implement internally and externally funded research studies and projects
  • Implement research studies: develop and maintain project timelines, oversee development of study materials and procedures, maintain study documentation and manage records, oversee study recruitment and data collection, develop and implement data quality procedures, plan and facilitate project meetings, develop and maintain the standard operating procedure documents for each study or project, prepare IRB applications and annual reports for federal agencies
  • Manage contracting process and negotiate with internal and external legal, privacy, and compliance entities
  • Develop and manage project budgets. Identify and monitor staffing needs
  • Ensure compliance with IRB regulations and adherence to federal or other agency funding regulatory requirements
  • Act as team leader for projects and studies, facilitating communication with collaborating agencies, consultants, outside agencies and project personnel as well as internal teams such as legal, privacy, operations and IT
  • Exhibit leadership skills such as task and project prioritization, communication at appropriate level/frequency, and providing feedback to other grant staff. Supervise the work of Research Assistants and Associate Grant Managers and provide mentorship
  • Manage the NIH grant application process. Contribute to the preparation of grant applications, including writing budget justifications, developing grant budgets (working with other Optum departments), contributing to literature reviews, and assisting with methodology development around operations and IT capabilities. Ability to contribute to scientific portions of grant applications
  • Under direction of Principal Investigator, conduct end to end data analysis of study data including program evaluation and randomized trials and write analysis and results sections of manuscripts. Assist with other sections of manuscripts as needed. Also take the lead on the writing of technical reports, posters, and presentations
  • Participate in strategic planning for the department and take on leadership and administrative responsibilities as required

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in public health, social work, psychology or health related field
  • 3+ years project management experience required, including experience creating and managing project budgets, developing and managing timelines
  • Knowledge and understanding of research and evaluation methodology and human subjects protection
  • Working knowledge of data management, reporting, statistical analysis, and statistical software programs, including SAS and R
  • Ability to design appropriate analyses and work with scientists to conduct and write up analysis plans and results
  • Previous experience working with legal departments and/or Institutional Review Boards (IRB)
  • Advanced skills in software such as Word, Powerpoint, Excel
  • Ability to take scientific ownership of research and evaluation projects as needed

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD
  • 3+ years research experience, including grant writing.
  • Publication(s) in peer-reviewed research journals, ideally as lead author
  • Working knowledge and understanding of federal regulations related to research with human subjects
  • Experience writing business requirements for technology solutions
