University Behavioral Center, a subsidiary of Universal Health Services, Inc. Our mental health facility provides safe and effective inpatient treatment to assist individuals in leading more productive and fulfilling lives. The facility is located on a beautiful 14-acre campus in Orlando, Florida, and includes 112 licensed beds.

Director of Risk Management

Responsible for identification, risk evaluation and coordination of corrective action implementation related to risk issues. Provides and/or coordinates intervention and education related to risk management issues to promote safe work practices and quality care and services; in an environment that is beneficial to the safety, health and well being of all patients, visitors and hospital staff. Coordinates risk programs with hospital departments, administration. Reports real and potential risk situations to the Corporate Risk Manager & Claims Manager, Governing Body, medical staff, administration, hospital departments and committees, as appropriate. Responsible for establishing and monitoring methods to avoid, eliminate and/or reduce risk situations associated with the provision of patient care and services. Responsible for local claims management activities to include coordination with corporate claims and legal departments as well as any local attorneys retained to manage hospital medical malpractice activities. These activities include staff identification for attorney interviews, deposition preparation, and deposition attendance as appropriate. This position also serves as the facilitys Corporate Compliance Officer.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Knowledge of basic components of risk management, including potentially compensable events, risk investigation, reporting and claims management.
  • Ability to perform medical record review for the purpose of identification of real or potential risk.
  • Ability to prepare risk identification reports for timely submission to Corporate legal.
  • Ability to prepare risk identification reports in summary format, for presentation of risk evaluation and risk trends analysis to the hospital administration, the medical staff and the Governing Body.
  • Refers information gathered from risk identification reporting to the appropriate department manager/administrative personnel member and/or hospital mechanism for analysis and corrective action to eliminate or reduce risk.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, and administrative team.
  • Reviews and revises the annual Patient Safety and Risk Management Plan based on recognized risk trends and best practices
  • Serves as the site representative of the Corporate Insurance Program in the management of claims/litigation of professional & general liability.
  • Advises hospital staff, medical staff and/or committees regarding real or potential liability situations.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with administration, medical staff and all hospital departments.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Maintains knowledge related to performance improvement activities throughout the hospital.
  • Knowledge of appropriate and current documentation practices related to the risk management arena.
  • Assists in development of policies and procedures related to risk management practices.
  • Coordinates risk management, performance improvement and patient relations information as needed for administrative activities, credentialing and hospital insurers.
  • Review, evaluates and recommends action on risk related matters pertaining to patients, visitors, employees, students, physical plant and personal property.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of accuracy and attention to details.
  • Demonstrates ability to listen, communicate effectively and express ideas clearly following appropriate channels of communication.
  • Demonstrates awareness of the responsibilities of the position and how it interfaces with the rest of the healthcare team. Works closely with all department members as required, is flexible to meet the needs of the department and changes in the workplace. Maintains a good working relationship with other departments.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities and to facilitate risk management processes.
  • Practices good guest relations with patients, visitors, physicians and staff, assists as needed.
  • Organizes and maintains the facilitys compliance policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates resources to assure proper implementation and ongoing effectiveness of the Compliance Program at the facility, including staff education.
  • Assures that the facilitys compliance program effectively prevents and/or detects violations of law, regulations, UHS or facility policies, the Code of Conduct and the Compliance Manual.

  • RN with Bachelors degree required (Masters and/or JD preferred).
  • 5 years hospital clinical experience; Risk Management experience preferred. Knowledge of the operations of the healthcare industry and delivery system. Knowledge of local, state and federal legislation.
  • CPHRM preferred or obtained with within 2 years of employment.
