**ROLE SUMMARY**

An Associate Scientist (R1) position is available in the Process Development group of Bioprocess R&D. The successful applicant will join a team of scientists and engineers focused on developing and optimizing microbial/ mammalian cell culture processes for recombinant proteins and biologics for early- and late-phase clinical trials. In this role you will be responsible for designing and executing bioreactor experiments in bench-top bioreactors and associated scale-down equipment with the goal of developing robust, scalable, and high productivity processes that produce therapeutic proteins with the appropriate product quality to treat human disease. The work will also involve working with pilot scale, commercial and clinical production facilities to ensure accurate technology transfer and successful large-scale production. You may also be involved in cutting edge technology development projects that seek to discover broadly applicable methods to intensify microbial or mammalian cell culture.



**ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES**



+ Execute fermentation/ cell culture experiments in automated bioreactors

+ Perform relevant analytical methods

+ Analyze and communicate experimental results both orally and in writing

+ Represent the upstream process development function within cross-functional teams

+ Transfer upstream process technology to pilot plant and GMP manufacturing facilities



**BASIC QUALIFICATIONS**



+ BS/BA in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or equivalent.

+ Requires competency in aseptic laboratory technique and the ability to design complex experiments and interpret data.

+ Requires demonstrated effectiveness in collaborative projects, and ability to communicate effectively with scientists and management in a highly matrixed organization.



**PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS**



+ 0-2 years industrial experience.

+ Knowledge of drug development processes for progression of a biological candidate.

+ Practical knowledge of microbial/ mammalian cell culture and cell physiology

+ Practical knowledge of cell expression systems

+ Experience developing commercially relevant processes to produce pharmacologically active proteins

+ Experience in supporting the scale-up and technology transfer to pilot/commercial scales

+ Knowledge of GLP/GMP practices

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills

+ Extreme attention to detail

+ Experience with technical report writing



**PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS**



Position requires occasional light lifting and periods of standing, sitting or walking. Some regular air travel required.
