Cox Enterprises is hiring an Assistant General Counsel, Privacy to join our Atlanta team! The AGC will support Coxs privacy and information security program by providing excellent legal counsel and subject matter expertise. Strong familiarity with the relevant legal and regulatory landscape in this area is required, as well as demonstrated experience in providing counsel on U.S. and international data privacy and information security laws. The AGC reports to the VP, Governance & Compliance, and will partner with our businesses and stakeholders to provide strategic legal input with respect to Coxs businesses.


* Handle privacy and data protection-related inquiries from a wide range of groups across the company and provide actionable advice and legal counsel to facilitate privacy and data protection compliance.

* Evaluate various Cox programs and initiatives considering applicable privacy/data protection requirements, including in particular those programs or initiatives related to employee personal information.

* Assist in the creation, maintenance, and implementation of policies, processes, data inventories and records of processing, and associated documentation relating to the processing of data.

* Coordinate with senior management to establish effective, practical controls, including auditing practices, with respect to data collection, management, and storage.

* Carry out Privacy Impact Assessments relating to new business initiatives involving the processing of personal information.

* Monitor and summarize relevant legislative developments, case law, regulatory guidance, and enforcement actions in the U.S., UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and other international jurisdictions as needed. Consult with and supervise outside counsel to develop legal strategies and resolve issues in routine matters.

* Review, draft and negotiate various types of agreements (e.g., vendor/service provider agreements, customer agreements, data processing, data transfer, and data usage agreements, etc.).

* Conduct awareness and training efforts as needed and/or required to increase employee understanding of company privacy policies, data handling practices and procedures, and legal obligations.

* Educate others about and help to implement various requirements driven by privacy and data protection laws, regulations, standards, and best practices, such as the California Consumer Privacy Protection Act, HIPAA, and General Data Protection Regulation.

* Operate independently with little supervision, and with the ability to recognize when issues need to be escalated; no direct management responsibilities.

* Carry out/perform duties consistent with strategic plans and directives as determined by more senior-level management and attorneys.

* Consistent exercise of sound judgment and discretion in all matters.

* Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

* Anticipate issues, estimate risks strategically, and identify proactive solutions.

* Base decision-making process on ethics and integrity.


* 10-12 years of legal experience, including at a large law firm, preferably with in-house experience focusing on privacy.

* Knowledge of CCPA, GDPR, and its requirements.

* CIPP certification

* Ability to anticipate, analyze, assess and articulate implications and risk of complex issues, including strategic implications, and pro-actively identify solutions.

* Demonstrated leadership, organization, facilitation, management, communication, and presentation skills.

* A highly collaborative individual with the ability to influence others and build strong professional relationships, including with technology, business, and legal partners.

* Proactive attitude and hands-on professional not dependent upon the large staff.

* Ability to work with cross-functional teams, take a leadership role in driving solutions, and work under pressure to meet deadlines.

* Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, demanding environment, and ability to exercise sound judgment while working autonomously.

* A high degree of professional ethics, integrity, and gravitas.

* Excellent customer service skills, time management, project management, and follow-up.

* Cost-effective management of outside legal resources.

* Ability to see the big picture while executing on the appropriate details.

* A proactive nature and "can-do" attitude.

* A good sense of humor, and a thirst for new challenges.

* Remains calm and cool-headed under pressure.

* J.D. degree, Current license to practice law in at least one state.
