The Assistant Director HIM/Coding assists in the development and creation of overall strategy for the UHS Acute Division Coding Operations. Provides direction and oversight of the coding personnel and operations, operational processes and workflow, including but not limited to, coding processes, and regional relationship management as applicable. Interprets policies and procedures, recommends changes as appropriate, and provides relevant feedback.Serves as a key promoter of Coding Operations and is responsible for setting the tone of Coding Operations as a service organization, to understand, meet the needs of the facilities.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provides direction and oversight to the UHS Acute Division Coding Team.
  • Support budgets, including monthly reporting, staffing, planning and forecasting.
  • Assists in development of the strategic direction of Coding Operations for the Acute Division.
  • Monitors operational performance according to productivity and quality standards.
  • Provides communication and escalation of significant issues affecting coding (e.g. coding backlogs, practice backlogs, quality issues), status of projects, barriers and successes.
  • Performs Policy and Procedures review and revisions as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with providers and region leadership to ensure optimal coding performance for the facilities.
  • Develops team members. Disciplines and counsels staff as necessary.
  • Assumes a lead role for innovation, knowledge sharing and leading best practice identification within Coding Operations and among peer group.
  • Assists in companywide initiatives/projects as it relates to coding.
  • Provides oversight and development of coding education and training, performance review process for all direct and indirect reports.
Job Requirements

Associate's Degree or 2 years of active college enrollment required.Bachelor's Degree preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience with extensive knowledgeof Coding as it relates to quality and reimbursement.
  • Proven training skills.
  • Must be knowledgeable about Medicare and other governmental regulations.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in PC use, Microsoft applications and working knowledge of 3M and Cerner. One or more of the following certifications; CCS, RHIT/RHIA
  • Travel approximately 15%
