About the role:

Software Engineers in the Dynamic Languages team of Customer Engineering department are responsible for diagnosing and solving complex issues in large-scale multi-tiered applications written in Node.js and Python, in addition to Ruby and GoLang, with some C/C++ on the side. We also touch on SAP, IIB, and CICS as well.

As experts in AppDynamics diverse set of offerings, from traditional APM to EUM, Analytics, IoT, and Machine Learning, we ensure that every customers experience with those offerings is extremely positive and adds deep value, improving their own customers' experiences.

When a customer runs into an issue, we are the first to respond, diving into the problem, tracking it down, directing product engineering on the full nature of the issue, where and why it occurs, and working with them to provide a solution. We work with and supplement customer engineering, product engineering, and the project management team on enhancements and hotfixes, providing our own engineering expertise as well as the customer use case perspective.

When we see a situation where a tool will improve some aspect of our job or even the job of Customer or Product Engineering, such as log analysis or information collectors, we engineer and develop that tool.

Additionally, because we are customer facing, we can advise product engineering and product management in features, problems, and use cases that should be considered.

As an AppD Software Engineer in Customer Engineering youll need to be quick on your feet, agile, resourceful, and a great problem solver. Youll need to spot patterns, recognize problems, and be tenacious in digging into issues to get to the root cause.

In addition, we are customer advocates, developing a relationship with our customers, understanding their application architectures, and also their pain, and working to ensure that we, at AppD, do what we can to alleviate that pain.

You will be responsible for constantly looking to improve the process through which we ensure product reliability in the context of our customers diverse and complex application space through tool development, testing pipeline development, and custom software development.

The problem space we work in is constantly changing. You will need to be ready to dodge and roll and come up standing with each new problem. You will be constantly learning new things, about our products, about our customers' products, and about the state of the art in the technology world today including the latest frameworks, cloud technologies, and architectures.

No matter what technical issues come up, you will play a critical and central role in resolving it, driving not just a work around, but a permanent solution as well as putting in place the testing infrastructure around the issues and defending against regressions.

Core Responsibilities

  • Help customers instrument, monitor, and debug their large multi-tiered complex applications.
  • Approach each new project as a mentoring opportunity, assigning tasks and milestones appropriate to team members & skill set
  • Write applications in all the available Node.js, Python, and GoLang stacks; learn new stacks and technologies and apply our instrumentation to these applications. There will be a need to pick up C/C++ as and when needed. 
  • Work on product bug fixes and feature development around customer related enhancements/issues but this is not a pure development role.
  • Replicate customer environments and work to identify & fix the root cause or provide interim workaround as needed.
  • Provide advanced technical support and work with customers to solve complex issues with the product in their environment.
  • Build internal and customer-facing Tools and extensions.
  • Identify product bugs and enhancements based on customer environments and work with the development team to close them.

About You

  • A software engineer, DevOps engineer, SRE, or code-writing sysadmin with a strong drive to build new skills, work with state-of-art technologies, and be a champion for quality software. 
  • 3+ years of in-depth maintenance experience in at least two of the following languages: Node.js, Python, Ruby, C/C++, GoLang with extensive debugging and troubleshooting skills. It is a huge plus if you have primary working knowledge in C/C++ and have good work experience in Nodejs or Python.
  • Knowledge of various container and container orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Pivotal, etc.
  • Knowledge of pure compute technologies such as AWS Lambda, Google Functions, and Azure Functions.
  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
  • Broad experience with open source web application frameworks.
  • Experience with object-oriented/modular programming.
  • Understanding of MVC design patterns and frameworks.
  • Good knowledge of web protocols, formats, and server environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Unix / Linux environments, with scripting in bash, Perl or Python.
  • Outstanding attention to detail, specification, and ability to troubleshoot/fix complex problems in customer environment and with customer-facing professionalism.

Bonus points for:

Coding and debugging in C/C++, Apache, IIB, SAP, Ruby, and Mainframe.

Experience in distributed and hybrid cloud application architectures (Azure, AWS, Cloud Foundry).
