Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain general ledger accounts specifically related to Medicare and Retirement
  • Reconcile, analyze and review general ledger balance sheet accounts in preparation for month end close
  • Prepare journal entries and review accounting classifications, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Journal entries for compliance in GAAP, STAT, and Health Care Reform (MLR) ledgers
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, schedules, summaries, and revenue analytics
  • Prepare documentation in support of internal and external audits
  • Perform ad hoc reporting and analysis and investigate issues providing explanation and interpretation
  • Collaborate with teams across Finance/Accounting, Optum Rx, and FDM
  • Assist with planning and executing user-acceptance testing process for accounting processes in relation to Medicare & Retirement projects
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures documentation
  • Performs work in as self-directed manner and works with less structured, more complex issues
  • Develop and communicate innovative approaches for continued improvement in efficiency and effectiveness
  • Coaches, provides feedback, and guides others
  • Support the financial close process
  • Maintain internal controls

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline
  • 2+ years of accounting experience including month end closing, preparation of financial statements, financial and variance analysis, and preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Core understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Intermediate to Advanced computer skills including MS Excel
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. When in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are required to wear a mask in common areas. In addition, employees must comply with any state and local masking orders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior work history within the healthcare industry
  • Prior experience with audit coordination and project management
  • Experience with Hyperion Smart View and PeopleSoft Financials
  • Experience with SAS Enterprise Guide 9.1 or higher. Functional knowledge of SQL/SAS
  • Organized and nimble enough to work multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple requests, assessing priorities and achieving solutions under deadlines
  • Demonstrates the drive and motivation to deliver high quality results based on thorough analysis
  • Ability to identify solutions to non-standard requests and problems
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal, as well as excellent interpersonal skills
  • Effective data analysis and interpretation skills
