Performs a variety of routine Respiratory Therapy duties including equipment cleaning & sterilization, equipment stocking, oxygen transports, oxygen rounds. Sets up and administers documents & charges for intermittent Respiratory Therapy modalities. After evaluation of competency, the Student RCP is allowed to perform all duties of an RCPS under the supervision of a credentialed RCP.

Job Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, Licensure, Training & Travel Requirements (if applicable):

• Must be actively enrolled in formal training school to obtain CRTT or RRT license.

• High school diploma or GED required. 

• BLS required. 

• Current provisional Oklahoma license required.

• Must successfully complete the pre-employment assessment.

• One-year clinical experience demonstrating progress towards completion of educational requirements for RRT preferred.

• Employee must be proficient and master all basic respiratory modalities and responsibilities. 

• Must be clinically trained in providing patient care modalities.

• Must be clinically checked off by clinical director of the ASRT school, and Director of the Cardio Pulmonary Department at SMRMC, in proficiency in clinical modalities.

• Basic computer skills required.                                                                                                                                                                                                     

 

 

Job Functions

1.

Obtains data pertinent to therapy by chart review and physical exam.

2.

Administer oxygen therapy, aerosol and humidity therapy, IPPB, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, suctioning, bedside respiratory measurements, pulse oximetry and EKG's as established by policies and procedures.

3.

Maintains asepsis with appropriate hand washing between patients.

4.

Cleans, disinfects and sterilizes equipment as needed according to CRCN policy.  Routinely cleans and assemble departmental equipment before leaving shift. Checks for dirty equipment on assigned areas.

5.

Uses Two Patient Identifiers on all patients

6.

Applies knowledge of basic science through data review and physical examination, to identify signs and symptoms which require initiation of emergency procedures.

7.

Provides ventilatory management on adult, pediatric and neonatal patients only under direct supervision of credentialed staff or as defined by provisional licensure limitations.

8.

Responds to Code Blue situations quickly and efficiently. Perform CPR as needed.  Consistently exchanges opened or unlocked carts. restocks crash cart post code

9.

Documents patient status and care given including heart rate, respiratory rate, SaO2, lung sounds and any adverse reactions.  Consistently documents on plan of care.

10.

Receives and gives report on condition of assigned patients to include patient information, orders, changes, initiation of new orders, transfers and dismissals. . Inputs any necessary changes

11.

Assumes and share responsibility of workload, according to level of skill and abilities. Maintains and updates assignment worksheet. Consistently has it ready for oncoming shift

12.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psycho social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area.

13.

Performs assessment/data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner per Patient Assessment policy.

14.

Consistently initiates new start therapy and changes in a timely manner per department policy. (within one hour of physician order)

15.

Collaborates with other members of the multidisciplinary team to develop an individualized care pan with consideration of the developmental needs of the patient.

16.

Implements care in knowledgeable, skillful, and continuous manner.

17.

Reassesses the patient as defined in the Patient Assessment policy and revises plan of care as needed and documents properly in respiratory checklist consisting of heart rate, respiratory rate, SaO2 and Lung sounds.

18.

Adheres to “five rights” when administering patient medications and uses 2 patient identifiers.

19.

Evaluates effectiveness of medications administered by close monitoring of patients vital signs.

20.

Intervenes appropriately in the event of adverse drug reaction.

21.

Ensures medication cart/Pyxis security is maintained and ensures medication is not left unattended.

22.

Reacts efficiently to emergency situations by adhering to policies and protocols, remains calm, informs appropriate personnel and documents events.

23.

Provides planned education for the patient per Patient/Family Education policy with consideration of developmental differences.

24.

Remains flexible in staffing patterns, willing to trade or work extra shifts in resolution of staffing conflicts

25.

Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and strives to manage situations in a reduced risk manner.

26.

Functions within the scope of practice for the Respiratory Care Practitioner licensed in Oklahoma.

27.

Reports variances according to risk management processes of UHS.

28.

Ensures the patient’s safety when transporting patients during discharge, transfer, or inter-departmental travel.

29.

Demonstrates timely self-directed learning and participates in continuing education annually to meet or exceed own professional licensure and department specific requirements.

30.

Provides respiratory treatment for patients of all ages to include use of Hand held Medication Nebulizers, BI Pap, Incentive Spirometry, Chest Physiotherapy, MDI, Mist tens and Flutter Vibratory

31.

Annually demonstrates competency regarding therapy.

32.

Annually demonstrates or exceeds competency in assembling of equipment used in patient care.

33.

Annually demonstrates competency in Continuous Ventilator Management utilizing various modes of ventilation to care for patients of all ages as defined by provisional licensure.

34.

Annually demonstrates competency in assisting with intubation as defined by provisional licensure.

35.

Annually demonstrates competency regarding troubleshooting and assembling equipment.

36.

Annually demonstrates competency regarding the maintaining of effective ventilation as defined by provisional licensure.

37.

Annually demonstrates competency in BI-Pap Continuous with Mask fit/placement.

38.

Annually demonstrates competency in BI-Pap Intermittent for treatment.

39.

Annually demonstrates competency in BI-Pap weaning from ventilator.

40.

Annually demonstrates or exceeds competency in assembling and using equipment appropriately.

41.

Annually demonstrates competency in performing EKG’s and appropriate EKG paperwork.

42.

Other duties assigned.
