Provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care through integrated drug distribution, patient counseling and teaching. Staff Pharmacists fill orders for medications, monitor patient’s drug therapies and provide drug information. Staff Pharmacists supervise and direct supportive staff. In the absence of the Director of Pharmacy, a staff pharmacist may be required to assume the responsibilities and perform the duties of the Director.

Job Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, Licensure, Training & Travel Requirements (if applicable):

• Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy required. 

• Licensed in the State of Oklahoma.  (Interns must be licensed within 90 days).

• 0–1 years of experience in Pharmacy required, 1-3 years hospital experience preferred. 

• Ability to work independently and handle stress appropriately.  Ability to work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff.  Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.  Ability to set priorities, make critical decisions and respond quickly to emergency requests.  Maintains competency in unique aspects of drug therapy for patients for which they provide care, including factors related to patients of all age groups to include neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

• Knowledgeable of and complies with laws, rules and regulations that govern the practice of pharmacy.

• Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members. 

• Ability to manage a diverse workforce and communicate effectively (verbal and written). 

• Software skills using MS Office, proficiency with MS Word, Excel and some Access required. 

• Pyxis experience with knowledge of Pyxis reports (i.e., optimization, load/unload, nursing narcotics access , etc.). 

• Financial Tracking experience. 

• Must successfully complete the pre-employment assessment.

 

 

Job Functions

1.

Interprets medication orders (verbal and written) and transcribes to computerized patient medication profiles accurately.  Maintains accurate, complete pharmacy patient medication profiles.

2.

Maintains awareness of developments in pharmacy and healthcare that relate to job responsibilities and integrates them into their practice.

3.

Supports the pharmacy’s pharmacoeconomic efforts.  Reviews the use of targeted medications for compliance with current pharmacoeconomic programs.

4.

Monitors drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug reactions, drug-food interactions, allergies, adverse reactions and appropriateness of drug, dosage form, regimen route, and therapeutic duplications.

5.

Assists with pharmacokinetic consult service and drug dosing regimens per hospital protocol.

6.

Sustains the hospital drug formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic substitution protocols and promoting rational drug therapy selection.

7.

Supervises and directs pharmacy support personnel.  Verifies the daily activities of pharmacy technicians.  Verifies the accuracy of all orders, IV admixtures and chemotherapy prepared by the technician.  Participates in the performance appraisal of pharmacy support personnel.

8.

Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners.  Suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternative to medical staff as needed.

9.

Issues controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records as required by law.

10.

Participates in continuing education programs, meetings, training programs and related activities.

11.

Participates in the quality improvement and medication use review activities of the  department.  Collects data, conducts inspections and maintains logs and other documentation as assigned.

12.

Participates in the development and presentation of orientation, education and training programs for the medical staff, nursing services, new employees and other hospital staff.

13.

Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.  Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security and fire and infection control.  Complies with all applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations.

14.

Performs other duties as required and assigned.
