Job Description

Arbour Hospital is a 136-bed private psychiatric facility located in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood. The hospital specializes in adult mental health treatment, adolescent and dual diagnosis services. Other services include partial hospitalization programs (PHP) and outpatient treatment.

Programs Include:

24-Hour Evaluations, Triage, and Admissions
Inpatient Treatment for Adolescents and Adults
The Quincy Center Inpatient Psychiatric Unit for Adults
Partial Hospitalization for Adults
Dual Diagnosis Services for Adolescents and Adults
Inpatient and Outpatient ECT Services.
Outpatient Services

Arbour Hospital is seeking dynamic and talented per-diem, Nurse Supervisors. The RN Supervisor is responsible for staffing, patient flow, and day to day clinical operations in addition to continued management functions including but not limited to, hiring functions, mentoring staff and counseling actions; a role that combines leadership and clinical patient care.

Main Responsibilities:
1. Attends intershift report
2. Conducts rounds
3. Exchanges relevant data with peers, Program Directors, and Nurse Executive via memo, communication book, direct contact. Attends meetings which address patient care issues as requested by Director of Inpatient Services.
4. Gives thorough change of shift report to oncoming Nursing Supervisor, detailing patient, staff and administrative issues.
5. Supports hospital-wide philosophy emphasizing performance improvement process and patient safety initiatives
6. Attends monthly Department Heads/Supervisors' meeting when feasible. Directly communicates pertinent data to CEO, Psychiatrist-in-Chief, Department Heads, and physicians as needed
7. Facilitates appropriate level of care of newly admitted patients via consultation with Intake Coordinator
8. Assures compliance of Policies and Procedures related to emergency codes (i.e., Red, Green, Yellow, and Blue) and completes documentation requirements in a timely manner.
9. Obtains necessary medications during off-shift hours in absence of pharmacist
10. Facilitates operations of physical plant in absence of Environmental Services staff.
11. Acts as liaison with community resources such as police department, fire department, other medical facilities.
12. Reviews clinical data with nursing personnel
13. Assists staff to formulate, evaluate and revise individualized treatment plans by utilizing both individual and group modes of supervision
14. Provides clinical supervision for designated staff.
15. Evaluates staff performance by direct observation and collaboration with peers. Provides verbal and written feedback to employee on an ongoing basis.
16. Completes performance evaluation for staff
17. Is knowledgeable of and follows policy and procedure for counseling or disciplinary action.
18. Encourages a professional demeanor in other staff by continuously exhibiting a high standards of professional behavior.
19. Shares clinical knowledge and expertise with staff through formal and informal discussions.
20. Provides unit coverage to facilitate staff attendance at scheduled educational offerings.
21. Updates clinical knowledge for staff through sharing of information obtained in journals, conferences and educational seminars as appropriate.
22. Reviews master schedules for his/her shift
23. Reallocates staff daily in accordance with established staffing patterns based on patient care needs.
24. Replaces sick calls, assists other managers in filling scheduling needs on weekly schedules
25. 11-7 Nursing Supervisor develops and coordinates a staffing schedule for his/her shift on a monthly basis.
26. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in staff allocation as measured in supervisory meeting and budget review.
27. Initiates his/her professional development on an ongoing basis.
28. Meets hospital attendance and punctuality policies.

Job Requirements

BSN is required
MSN is preferred.
In-house - Associate degree in Nursing, with demonstrated competence.

Current R.N. Mass. license
Two years inpatient psychiatric experience with one year as supervisor.
Ability to manage, observes, move and communicate with patients, including ability to walk, lift, twist, and bend and to sit and stand for long periods of time.
Must have emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
Demonstrated leadership skills in decision making, problem solving and interpersonal relations.
Demonstrated competence in psychiatric nursing and medical/surgical assessment skills.
