Job Description

::The Nurse Manager provides administrative and clinical supervision to all nursing staff and psychiatric technicians on two or more units.

The Nurse Manager is a liaison to department directors and administration to ensure coordinated and efficient operations of services and departments on their unit.

The Nurse Manager promotes patient care consistent with the philosophy and objectives of Fairmount Behavioral Health System and the ANA Standards of Practice for Psychiatric Mental Health Care.

Job Requirements

::To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description.  The Nurse Manager must demonstrate flexibility and the knowledge and skills required to manage units providing care to a varied population including children, adolescents, adults, and dually diagnosed patients.  The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position.

Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program.  BSN preferred.

Experience: Two (2) years clinical experience with a psychiatric mental health population, previous clinical supervisory role in a psychiatric setting preferred.


Licensure/Certification: Licensure and registration by the Pennsylvania Board of Nurse Examiners as a registered nurse, American Nursing Association Psychiatric Mental Health Certificate preferred.


Knowledge:  Prefer knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing principles, working concepts and theory, leadership skills, age specific growth and development, limit setting, crisis and behavior management. 


Supervision Received: Chief Nursing Officer and Assistant Chief Nursing Officer


Environmental Conditions: Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior.  Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, and other hazardous waste.  General hospital environment.


Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.  Physical agility to manage patients.  Push, pull, and lift up to 40 pounds.  Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping.  Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of

Safety Standards:

  1. Annually review safety policies for your department to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and hospital practice.
  2. Annually review the number of injuries, types and costs for your department as well as provide effective corrective action which results in reduction in accidents.
  3. Annually set goals for your department and review every six months for compliance.
  4. Annually review and maintain updated job descriptions, performance evaluations, orientation checklists and competencies.
  5. Report all accidents immediately and provide effective and timely corrective action on all accidents.
  6. Ensure departmental safe work practice.


Job Classification:     Exempt; Hours vary and may include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts.
