Job Description

Garfield Park Behavioral Hospital invites you to apply to be a Program Specialist in our first-of-its-kind, psychiatric inpatient program for young people – Polaris.


THE POLARIS PROGRAM is an acute care, 18-bed specialty unit within Garfield Park Behavioral Hospital which serves young people who might be struggling with an aspect of their gender and/or sexual identity. Polaris provides a safe place where gender and sexual minority adolescents can receive affirming inpatient psychiatric care and help navigate their identity(s).


JOB SUMMARY: The Program Specialist (PS) provides direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. Primary responsibilities include the provision of a safe and therapeutic milieu, crisis intervention, and activities of daily living. The PS is additionally responsible for the programming schedule for young people in the Polaris Program and also supervises the unit’s Mental Health Specialists.

Job Requirements

To perform this job successfully, the PS must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description. The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position. The PS must have experience with behavioral management techniques, be well versed in evidenced-based clinical approaches, have knowledge of psychiatric disorders and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced interdisciplinary team approach environment.  The PS should also have experience working with LGBTQ youth, their families, and communities. LGBTQ identified people and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.



Masters Degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field required.


1-2 years experience working in an inpatient setting preferred.

1-2 years experience working with the LGBTQ population required.
