Director of Women’s Services

The Director assumes 24-hour responsibility and accountability for nursing care for Women and Children’s Health including Labor and Delivery, Antepartum, Postpartum, Nursery and Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Provides leadership, management and direction to continually improve the profession of nursing and patient care outcomes at the George Washington University Hospital (GWUH) using a focus of Service Excellence Standards. Responsible for nursing quality programs that are outcome oriented. Develops and implements initiatives in accordance with government regulations, licensing and accreditation requirements that effectively utilize resources to reach the organizations short and long term strategic goals. The Director works collaboratively with the entire health care team to support the mission, vision, and values of the organization. May be designated to assume responsibilities of daily operations of the organization in the absence of other hospital administrators.

Job Requirements


  • MS in nursing or Master's degree in related field required
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in the specialty with at least two years in a management/supervisory position. Preferred over 8 years of progressive nursing management experience in an acute care setting.
  • Director of Nursing experience preferred
  • Certification in specialty preferred



  • Women and Children s Services expertise to meet Quality, Performance Improvement, Nursing, Finance, Supply Management and Information Technology goals
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to adapt to multiple & changing priorities
  • Knowledge of principles & practices relevant to clinical nursing specialty practice.
  • Effective management & supervisory practices.
  • Highly developed written & verbal communication
  • Ability to foster a collaborative environment between staff members. Able to achieve operational goals though influence and expert change management skills.
  • Leadership abilities that contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Proficient computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent teamwork, written and verbal communication and analytical skills
